Apple’s new iPad Pro 9.7-inch has fallen into the hands of the repair and disassembly experts over at iFixit who have done with it what they do best – taken it apart!
With no surprise, the iPad 9.7″ teardown revealed that the smaller tablet packed all the features previously found in the original 12.9-inch iPad Pro in a smaller package with few minor internal differences.
iFixit says that the iPad Pro 9.7-inch is hard to open and requires a lot of patience. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro’s battery is slightly smaller than the iPad Air 2’s battery at 7,306 mAh versus 7,340 mAh.The 12 MP camera upgrade over the larger iPad Pro’s 8 MP camera makes it necessary to bring back the camera bump.
On the downside, iFixit said, “The fused front panel increases the cost of screen repair, and the risk of damaging the LCD when opening” while the “gobs of adhesive hold everything in place, making all repairs more difficult,”.
Inside the iPad Pro 9.7-inch, the team came across a diverse array of parts,
- Apple APL1021 A9X 64-bit Processor
- Samsung K3RG1G1 2 GB (16 Gb) LPDDR4 RAM
- SK Hynix H23QEG8VG1ACA 32 GB (256 Gb) NAND Flash Memory
- 2 × Broadcom BCM15900B0
- Apple 339S00109 Wi-Fi Module
- NXP 66V10 NFC Controller and 1610A3 Charging IC
- InvenSense EMS-A 6-axis Gyroscope and Accelerometer Combo
The iPad Pro 9.7-inch scored a poor two out of ten for repairability scale.
